Confusion: Genre and Sex as well as Book 2

Quite a few people read the book and then comment about the fact that there's sex in it. That they want less, that it was filler, or that they skipped it.

I don't understand these comments. The point of the book was to have sex in it.

It is very clearly labeled in the blurb that the book is intended for adults.

Strange.

Book 2 is going well.

Unsure of timeline.

  1. This book showed up in my recommendation section of amazon with my litrpg stuff even though I don't often buy adult novels. So maybe some people just read a bit of the description and were sold before the warning.

Loved the book though can't wait for the second!

    1. Thanks for the compliment!

That's also a good point. I didn't consider that angle.

Thank you for providing me with that :D

  2. I liked the book, but I was much more informed by the reviews and comments comparing it to the Daniel Black/Fimbulwinter series. To me, and I believe to some other readers, "adult themes" does not necessarily equal explicit sex. It just means that there are things going on that calls for a more mature perspective. I thought the Last Horizon series by Daniel Schinhofen tackled "adult themes" in that it dealt pretty unflinchingly with the real-life terminal illness of a main character, for example.

Again - I liked Wild Wastes, but I can see how people could have read your blurb and still not realized that there'd be sex ahead.

    1. Hm. I suppose. I'm not sure how I could have been more direct without saying, "There's sex in this."

The problem with doing that in the blurb, is Amazon will flag you as "adult" and send you to the dungeon. Never to grace a search engine again.

    2. I am pretty sure "This story contains a harem" literally spells out what you're in for. I guess people thought it would be like an anime harem where the protagonist is surrounded by young nubile members of the opposite sex who are madly in love with him, but is either too thick-headed or too shy to actually do anything about it, which, by the way, is literally (And I mean that in the literal sense of the word) the worst kind of harem invented.

    3. Agreed. They really are the worst.

    4. I really enjoyed the entire plot! Like the above mentions the typical "Harem" cliche, you actually brought value to the story with the adult themes. Can't wait for the next installment!

    5. Glad to hear that!

Definitely already writing the second book.

I promise to hire an editor this time. I really wasn't expecting the first book to do so well.

Genuinely thought people would dislike it.

  3. I dont understand why some people where freaking out about it. Adult themes, can cover a lot of things, plus after reading the description, and the sample i pretty much knew where it was going. And to say the same, This did show up in my Litrpg section (not that i mind, because its pretty close to being stuck in a game anyway). But i cant wait for 2! (BTW the length was awesome as well. i did not feel like there was only one main point, and then the book ended.)

    1. I try to stick to a three arc plot system. Or at least three ideas that you'll tend to remember afterwards.

Thanks for the compliments though, I'm glad you liked it.

  5. Let's be fair here guys, this is one of the best written "sex books" out there because there is *gasp* a pretty good plot and the sex is just weird and kinky enough to make it stand out amongst a sea of banal "sex books" that are little more than literary porn wrapped in a thin foil of plot.
The sex was cool and all, but to be honest it's dime a dozen on Amazon, it's the characters, the world, and their adventures that compelled me to finish the novel.

P.S. When can I get my figurative hands on the next "Slave Harem series" (your words, not mine) novel?

    1. Soon! I hope to have it done as quickly as possible. Already writing it.

And thank you for the kind words! I tried very hard not to be vanilla as far as the sex went, but not so unworldly as to scare people away.

    2. Yeah I feel like you're toeing the line between morbid curiosity and a freak out. For example, I am pretty sure a centaur would have been a deal-breaker for a lot of people (Not that I'm judging).

One a completely different note, have you ever watched Monster Masamune? Because if you have not, they have a pretty cool variety.

  6. I loved your story. I don't understand why people would even take the time to complain about something like sex in an adult story, especially one that is written so well... Well to each thier own I guess, I can't wait for the next book.
    P.S.
I thought the sex scenes were well written and well placed.

My goal was to write a sex scene only when it advanced character plot, story plot, or it had been long enough to put another one in.

Oh well. I'll just go on writing my dirty harem stories.

    4. Still contemplating that. I'm not sure if Vince will overcome his problem with it or not yet.

That and I already wrote in some new characters. :D

    5. I wouldn't be dissapointed with Vince either way. You've really done well making him feel real....... dig the multicolored nubile elves also. Still trying to wrap my head around "ant style".

  9. A lot of books have sex and relationships in them, I think the problem most people had was the quantity and very explicit nature of the sex in these books - but mainly the quantity.
I really enjoyed the books for the plot, but did feel that the sex was somewhat overdone and a filler as you mentioned.
I felt that the numerous sex scenes were sometimes distracting from a very pleasurable plot line. I think that at least half as much sex scenes would have improved the overall book.
Also I have to admit that the antwoman sex was a bit too much for me and I skipped those parts. I think on some subconscious level it might have put me a bit off from the other sex scenes in the book as well. Something about it just bothers me on a subconscious level.

All in all I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the sequel.

    1. Well, the book is aimed towards Adult Fantasy.

So I'm sorry to say, it isn't filler. In fact I tried hard to make the sex relevant and at least a little plot driven.
And there will be as much sex in the next book.

And probably with stranger fantasy creatures. :)

Sorry friend, I appreciate that you liked the book, but this series really is Adult Fantasy.

I hope you can still enjoy the book, but that's the direction it'll keep going.

  10. Fellow author of erotic/adult fantasy and sci-fi, here. I've come to the conclusion that some people are just so uncomfortable with sex that the second they run across a significant amount of it in a book, they lose their shit.

You have to stick to your guns and write what you want. I put a very detailed warning on each of my books explaining that yes, there is a significant amount of erotic content. There's always a few prudish people that end up reading my stuff anyway and complaining, but it is what it is.

This is what I want to write and what I love to read. Really enjoyed your book, by the way. Don't let a few naysayers keep you from producing awesome content.

  11. Hello, just wanted to stop by, and say I really did appreciate the work you put into this book, and that it was a truly enjoyable read. Much like quite a few other commenters, I was drawn to this story in part due to its apparent similarity to the Daniel Black series. And I must confess, I wasn't disappointed. This story contained a well written romance in the sense that the MC didn't try to boink their way across any female entity that appealed to their aesthetics. As many other harems I've read have. I cannot wait to see the continuation of your story, though there are a few questions I must query into:
    1. Will the main character's true race be addressed? Since it has been brought up in passing that he is a cross between human and some type of waster, but never really gone in depth with.
    2. I hope the MC doesn't necessarily drop the budding society he is building to go off on the quest for his parents and his true identity (or at least if he does do so, it isn't at all abrupt, and seem like the MC just decided to drop everything and go)
    3. I hope that all the females in the harem can continue to have their characters fleshed out, as that was another great piece in your first work.
Looking forward to more in the future (sorry for the wall of text though haha)

  12. After a dry spell, a new book is published and completely blows your mind, at least that is how it felt for me. Never would have imagined someone being brave and witty enough to put such a story together. I liked that the protagonist was badass but not overpowered, you found a really good balance. The action scenes were well written and immersive. Moreover, i really enjoyed the world and kingdom building. As for the sex scenes, PLEASE don't let the people sway you to reduce the amount or the explicit nature of them. I found them to be not only well written but also fitting for the story. Oh my, I'm sorry but i'm not afraid to admit i like well written kinky sex scenes, sue me. On the other hand, i can see people being caught unaware. As for that i hope you can find a suitable solution without being put in the confidential archives of Amazon (I'm completely fine with the current state though). I wish you the best of success with your future releases. I need more, please hurry ^^! Sorry for my bad English it's not my native language.

  14. You know this book was refreshing, cause at the end of the day the reader has an opportunity to put themselves in the position of the MC. Let me tell you, sex is a reality of life and some people have a little and want a lot, some have a lot and want more and some are just uncomfortable with it period. The book was awesome and the sex added to the connections between the characters. Quite frankly, what red blooded heterosexual or Lesbian wouldn't want a harem. Keep em coming Randi. Ok rant ended

  16. It was a pleasure to read your book. My favorite book USED to be The Black Castle BY Les Daniels, but I can honestly say Wild Wastes has wholeheartedly replaced that as my favorite. I have read your book 9 times in the last 3 weeks and have even read it to my wife who thoroughly enjoyed it as well. I cannot wait for the next book to be released.
The only thing that I don't like about this book is that it doesn't come in hard copy. If there is ANY way you could look into this and make this happen that would be awesome.
    Sincerely,
    This Grumpy Marine

    2. I truly feel this book was very well written. I love the characters, ALL of them, and I don't usually say that. Except for Al, I hope something big, fat, and slimy loves him not so tenderly and repeatedly. You've written a great world with vibrant characters, they actually feel real to me. Half of the time when I read a book I only find a handful of characters that I can really see when I imagine them. This is not the case with Wild Wastes. I can see each character vividly in my imagination with the way that you have them written.
As far as how long you should run the series. I have an opinion. Go nuts. Run a marathon with it. Take it as far as you possibly can. I'm sure any real fan of the book would tell you the same thing.

  17. Hi. I read Wild Wastes and enjoyed the book very much. I was wondering if you have any other samples of your writing online to hold us rabid fans over. Fanfiction, short stories, or if any of your work had ever been placed in a short story anthology.

My favorite part of the book was the part where Petra and Vince had to flee across battle lines between two countries. I found the idea of Petra too bizarre to be erotically interesting but she ended up being my favorite character in the book.

    1. How deep down the rabbit hole would you want to go? How many books? How far into the plot?

I ask because I do have a closing idea for the series, but i'm contemplating how long I should wait to get there.

    2. I would say when you start forcing yourself to write filler just to make one of the sequels beefier. I don't want you to ruin your characters and their world just to satisfy sales. I want you to be happy with your work as much as we are.

    3. Fair enough.

I admit I already have a different book idea planned as well. So when Wild Wastes closes up, as all books eventually do, we'll be moving to a new story and new character.

  20. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm really looking forward to the next one! One thing I would be happy to see in the next book is more relationships between the girls, both sexual and non. So rather a man and his harem of followers, you'd have a group of "people" adventuring and loving together.
But it's your story, and I look forward to what ever we get.

  22. Both myself and my wife loved this book and are avidly waiting for the next book. As to the topic tho the sex scenes in the novel are really important because they serve to better understand the characters involved. Even with the characters who are close to inner circle but haven't made that leap into bedmates are better understood by their involvement or lack thereof in the bedgames(I.e. the teasing and flirting). You have a fantastic winning formula in this book please keep the greatness going!!
